The terms “research-based” and “evidence-based” have become buzz words for continuing education and treatments alike. In fact, many schools and conferences only want to offer classes on modalities that have been “proven” to work by organized research studies. While it is an amazing development that research has been done to verify the results massage therapists had been seeing for decades if not centuries before any research was available, it is important for therapists to also learn to rely on their own skills, senses and connection with their clients. For even the most highly researched treatments are more likely to be accepted by clients if the therapist using them is connected to and compassionate with the person on their table. Students will learn to ask better questions, give better answers and listen at a deeper level. By taking the time to do their own client-based research before, during and after the session, better outcomes are assured for all.
