Piedmont Unit Meeting – Standard V Ethics and Compassionate Touch
Class Description
The purpose of this course is to explore how compassion influences bodyworkers in regards to ethical conduct as described in Standard V, and ethical decision making. We will consider the impact compassion can have on the therapeutic relationship and provision of services; in general and for the individual therapist. We will review related state and national ethics codes as they relate to this subject. Suggested strategies for self awareness, self monitoring and ethical decision making will be presented. Instruction will include lecture, discussion and participation in group exercises/activities.
Course Objectives:
- Participants will be able to explain how compassion is related to and can influence professional ethics.
- Participants will have an understanding of the role compassion plays in their practice and in their decision making processes related to ethical matters.
- Participants will be able to use strategies presented in the course to problem solve and make ethical decisions in accordance with national standards if/when they arise.
Course Schedule:
8:30 to 9:00 – Sign-In
9:00 to 9:15 – Introduction
9:15 to 9:45 – Ethics and Morals; Definitions and description, Internal and External factors (National Standards) and considerations; lecture presentation
9:45 to 10:30 – Class exercise and discussion; Self awareness of internal factors
10:30 to 11:00 – Compassion; Personal and professional boundaries; lecture presentation
11:00 to 11:30 – Small group activity; consideration and discussion ethical dilemmas that may occur
11:30 to 12:00 – Problem solving and decision making strategies

Speaker Biography
Sheryl McGavin
Sheryl has been practicing Craniosacral Therapy for almost 30 years and currently has her own practice in the Waxhaw, NC. Prior to moving to Waxhaw 8 years ago, she was a staff therapist and instructor for the Upledger Institute for 10 years, working and teaching with Dr. John Upledger until he retired. Since leaving the Upledger Institute, she has been developing and teaching classes with the CST Alliance (www.CSTAlliance.com) and runs a local CST study group where she mentors therapists who are studying CST.
While at the Upledger Institute, Sheryl was certified to teach all levels of classes, from beginning to advanced, taught the tutorial for aspiring instructors, and was the administrator and ombudsman for multiple levels of classes which involved overseeing the certification process for new instructors and ongoing course and study guide development. She was diplomate certified and an examiner for the certification program.
For the CST Alliance Sheryl is currently a co-developer of the curriculum and certification process, a co-writer of the study guides, and an instructor for all levels of classes. Sheryl also lectures and presents at conferences for a variety of groups on the topics of Ethics and Craniosacral therapy.
